Three-Minute Thesis, or 3MT, is a lively and exciting Scholars Showcase presentation category featuring WWU graduate students from various disciplines who are tasked with explaining their research to a general audience in three minutes or less, using a single PowerPoint slide. The Three-Minute Thesis originated as a competition created by The University of Queensland. Hundreds of universities worldwide hold 3MT events each year.

Scholars Week Showcase Event: Poster Session

The annual Poster Session is the centerpiece Scholars Showcase event, attracting more than 200 WWU undergraduate and graduate students who present research and creative work in poster form. Students from all disciplines share their outstanding academic achievements resulting from faculty mentorship — whether research, creative work, or a combination of the two — with the larger Western community, family, friends, and visitors.

Scholars Week Showcase Event: Faculty/Student Group Presentations

Scholars Week 2023 Event
Faculty/Student Group Collaborations are 30-minute presentations by a faculty member and a group of students from a WWU department or program. These special Scholars Showcase presentations feature research, creative work, or other academic projects resulting from collaborative participation between students and their instructors in the field, in a lab setting, studio or in some other collaborative setting or arrangement.

Scholars Week 2023

Scholars Week, Western Washington University’s annual, week-long celebration of academic excellence featuring outstanding student research and creative work, will be held May 15 – 19, 2023. Scholars Showcase events include Faculty/Student Group Collaborations held from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 16 in Wilson Library Reading Room; The Poster Session, held from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 17 in Carver Gym; and Three-Minute Thesis Presentations held Thursday, May 18 in SMATE Library from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Spring Strategic Budget Forum

Please join President Sabah Randhawa, Joyce Lopes, Vice President for Business and Financial Affairs, and Faye Gallant, Executive Director of Budget & Financial Planning, for the University-wide Spring Strategic Budgeting Forum. The presenters will review Western’s strategic budgeting process, discuss university priorities for the next cycle of proposals, and learn how Western will address our budget deficit.

Scholars Week May 16 - May 20

Scholars Week, an annual celebration of student research and creative activities at Western, is the highlight of the academic year. From art to engineering technology, students and faculty work closely together to explore the boundaries of knowledge.

Scholars Week May 17 - May 21

Western celebrates Scholars Week, an annual campus event showcasing the best of student scholarship, virtually, May 17 – 21. As an online gallery, the Scholars Showcase features a virtual poster session of outstanding scholarly research and creative works by graduate and undergraduate students from across disciplines, programs and departments at Western. The showcase will also feature a Three-Minute Thesis (3MT®) graduate student competition on Wednesday, May 19.

Scholars Week Call for Submissions April 26 though May 12, 2021.

Scholars Week 2021 currently seeks Western graduate and undergraduate student submissions through May 12 for a virtual Scholars Showcase of undergraduate and graduate student research and creative works to be presented as part of the online Poster Session. Submissions also are sought from Western graduate students for a Three-minute Thesis competition, new this year. Scholars Week will take place Monday, May 17 through Friday, May 21 and will include opportunities for visitors to interact with presenters through live chat sessions and live-streaming Q&A.

Scholars Week Accepting Submissions

The Scholars Week Planning Committee is pleased to call for submissions, from April 26 through May 12, for the Annual Scholars Showcase, featuring a Poster Session and a graduate student Three-Minute Thesis competition. Scholars Week, to be held virtually from May 17 - May 21, is a celebration of graduate and undergraduate students’ scholarly pursuits.
